Use of the word Karaite or "Qara'it" originally referred to those Pharisees who opposed the Scribes and believed that too much emphasis was placed on Hillelite Halakhah but these days the term may pertain to any of the following:

• Subbotniks
• Crimean Karaites
• Proto-Karaites
